Abstract
The article aims to present the size and pace of development of organic production and organic food market in Europe. The biggest areas of agricultural land utilized for organic farming are in the countries, where the organic food market is the biggest, i.e. in the richest countries of Western Europe. However, meeting the demand for organic food based on those countries' own production is not possible and must be supported by import i.a. from Poland. Therefore, organic production in Poland is developing quickly, which is also a great opportunity to develop for many farms, especially the smaller ones, and to utilize a surplus of labour force that exist in Polish agriculture.
