Abstract
This article describes smart specialisation, a new mechanism for stimulating economic development in regions and EU member states. The aim of the article is to present theoretical assumptions behind this notion in the context of regional policy. The article, by critically analysing the research literature, describes the creation process of smart specialization and attempts at identifying the potential areas of smart specialisation in the Polish regions. Smart specialisation is a new and hotly debated topic, as witnessed by a number of theoretical and empirical studies related to this notion worldwide.
